2D barcodes are becoming a retail readiness project
GS1 Canada explains that 2D barcodes can carry a GTIN plus additional data such as lot number, serial number, expiry date and URLs. The global grocery ambition is for retail point-of-sale systems to be capable of reading defined 2D barcodes by the end of 2027. That is a capability goal, not permission to remove every existing linear barcode today.
Choose the use case first

Verify the printed result
