Plan your in-house product-label printing

Start with the job, not the printer name

List your label sizes, daily volume, number of designs, colour needs, variable information and how labels are applied. Include the widest artwork and smallest text or barcode. Print width is the printable area; media width includes the liner, so they are not interchangeable specifications.

Choose between colour label printers and thermal printers based on the job. Colour inkjet supports product artwork on compatible coated media. Direct thermal and thermal transfer support different monochrome identification workflows; thermal transfer also needs a compatible ribbon.

Match the blank roll and consumables

Record the exact printer model, label dimensions, liner width, core, roll outside diameter, winding and gap or black-mark requirements. Choose the printer-specific ink family and maintenance item; similar-looking cartridges are not necessarily interchangeable.

Start with the label and ink finder, blank inkjet labels or thermal labels. For thermal transfer, also confirm ribbon width, length, core, winding, chemistry and printhead compatibility in the ribbon collection.

Choose materials for the real package

Dry indoor packaging, condensation, oils, cold storage and abrasion create different demands. Paper, BOPP and permanent adhesive are descriptions, not blanket waterproof, freezer or certification claims. For bottles and jars, measure the usable panel and check curves and seams. For an applicator, confirm roll orientation and finished-roll dimensions with the equipment specification.

Approve artwork and a physical proof

• Have the responsible reviewer approve mandatory copy, language, claims and regulatory layout.
• Print the real design at final size on the intended stock.
• Check scaling, registration, text, colour, barcode verification where required, and variable data.
• Apply the label and test the actual storage and handling conditions.
• Record the approved artwork version, supplies, printer settings and application method.

Plan repeat orders clearly
